Surrey senior cup and sutton continue poor form Merstham 2-1 Sutton United Saraiva 34 Hutchings 90 Cooper 63 Date 13 January 2015 Competition Surrey Senior Cup 3rd Round Attendance Referee John OBrien (Wimbledon Park) Lineup 1 Tom Lovelock 2 Jack Evans 3 Jamie Collins 4 Ricky Wellard 5 Shaun Cooper 6 Louis John H-T Serbonij 7 Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick 8 Glen Southam 9 Craig Dundas 10 Bedsente Gomis 11 Dan Wishart 12 Jerson Dos Santos 14 15 Kevant Serbonij 16 17 Ricky Bowry Suttons accident prone season continued in like fashion on Tuesday when they saw their last hopes of silverware for the campaign disappear with a last minute goal that gave Ryman League Division One South promotion contenders Merstham a place in the quarter finals of the Surrey Senior Cup. After taking the lead against the run of play, the home side were reduced to ten men just before half time when Simon Cooper was sent off for a foul on Dan Wishart, and when Sutton levelled just after the hour mark they would have expected to go on and win, but they were unable to pierce the massed ranks that guarded the Merstham penalty area, and with extra time looming substitute Tommy Hutchings, so impressive for Leatherhead against Us in the FA Cup three seasons ago, spun away from Shaun Cooper and slipped the ball past the advancing Tom Lovelock to spark joyous scenes among the home contingent. With the exception of Micky Spillane, delayed en route to the game by a traffic accident, this was just about as strong a side as Sutton could field from their fit players, with the bonus being a return for Louis John after a three month injury absence, and for the first half hour, after an early scare when Omar Folkes nipped in to round Lovelock but found the angle too tight and hit the side netting, Us looked two levels higher than their opponents until they reached the penalty area, where familiar failings recurred. Bedsente Gomis shot over after being set up by Wishart, and Craig Dundas was put through by Jamie Collins but failed to muster the power to beat Brannon Daly in the Merstham goal. Less culpable was Jack Evans, brought down just outside the penalty area and whose free kick took a deflection off the wall and was tipped over by Daly at full stretch. Eleven minutes before the break, though, Stefan Cox, who had a brief spell with Sutton in Paul Doswells second season at the club, was tripped just outside the Sutton penalty area, and Fabio Saraivas well struck free kick hit the far post before nestling in the netting in the opposite corner of the goal. Sutton should still have been level at half time as Gomis intercepted a careless pass but, from a similar position to that in which Dundas had found himself, like Dundas saw the oncoming Daly smother his shot. Us hopes seemed to improve on the stroke of half time when Cooper was dismissed for an ungainly hack at Wishart as the lively winger cut inside him, but Mersthams reaction for the second half was to take Cox off, bring on defender Dean Gunner and invite Sutton to break them down. Us also made a change at the break, Louis John replaced by Kevant Serbonij having come through unscathed except for a bout of cramp, and they toiled without joy trying to find a way through, coming closest when a low cross shot from Gomis slithered under Daly but was scrambled away from the six yard box. Then Cooper collected a clearance midway inside the home half, brought the ball forward, and with few other options went for a shot from 25 yards that deflected to Dalys right and squeezed inside the post. Ricky Wellard almost added to the goal immediately with a dipping shot from the angle of the penalty area, but for all their possession Sutton couldnt find the space in a crowded penalty area, and when they did get round the sides the final ball was disappointing, and when Hutchings broke away to give the home side the lead again there was no time for Us to recover, although they did win one free kick on the edge of the penalty area that ended with Collins volleying high over the bar seconds before the final whistle blew.
