Survivors of abuse may become very sensitive to the mood of those - TopicsExpress

Survivors of abuse may become very sensitive to the mood of those around them. We trained ourselves to be constantly monitoring the mood of our abuser in order not to be punished in some way. We also learned to do this as a way to assess any potential threats to our emotional safety. We came to realize that a nonverbal cue such as a deep sigh from our abuser meant we were going to be blamed for something or expected to appease him in some way. The trouble is the abuser will often refuse to share his issue- it is simply your job to figure out what it is and make it right...somehow. You may find yourself noticing sighs, disturbed looks, or other nonverbal cues in others more quickly than others as a lasting effect of a survival instinct that was created. ~Ruth
