Swimming - Breathing Technique For the Front Crawl I - TopicsExpress

Swimming - Breathing Technique For the Front Crawl I sometimes find when swimming in a triathlon that I need to breath threw my nose a bit there is a lot of movement in the water, and some water tends to get up my nose. But you can do what works best for you, but it is safer to exhale threw your mouth most of the time, sometimes breathing threw the nose can bring on problems like headaches Exhale into the water without exhaling properly you will not be able to take in sufficient oxygen, and you will quickly tire. The time you have with you head out of the water does not give you a chance to both exhale and inhale. So when your head is in the water exhale slowly, try to feel relaxed as you do it, try not to tense up to much. Head position Turn your head to the side when breathing, but do not lift your head up out of the water, as this will cause your legs to sink and water to go up your nose. Keep your head down and slightly turned, with your leading arm fully extended. Opening your mouth When your head is out of the water try to open your mouth wide so that you can get enough air in, when your head is out of the water, open your mouth wide and suck the air in. After a while just opening your mouth when your head comes out of the water will get you enough air. Timing Timing is all important when breathing, try having your head turned just as the arm is coming out of the water. You will need to practice to get the timing to come naturally So to recap... Do not hold your breath Open your mouth wide to inhale, even sucking the air if you are not getting enough air. Exhale under the water slowly with an opened mouth, do this slowly almost like a sigh, you can simulate a sighing sound to perfect this. Trying to get the timing of turning your head initially and knowing where to have your arms can initially take a bit of work, swimming is like driving a car, as a beginner you need to think about where 2nd is and how to and when to use the mirrors, swimming is the exact same, but after a while you will just do everything without even thinking.
