Symbolically active pervasive technology–technology being the means of ordering the world–has altered the world in such a way that it has obscured the transcendent ground of (the) world (the users of this technology live in). Pervasive technology, symbolically profane, has and continues to so transform societal consciousness concerning nature–nature meaning, that which is perceived to be fundamentally real–that the symbolic action of the profane leaves no place for sacred time and space; all time and space becomes a means to some end. The human body, one of the last vestiges of sacred space, is understood by many to be a biological machine. In this sense the consciousness of technologically sophisticated late twentieth-century human beings has lost any connection to the sacred ...(and) transcendent Other as ground of the real. Technology as purveyor of the profane now runs nearly unchecked and threatens to reduce life to artifact so that the multiplicity of artifacts threaten the communicative efficacy of traditional religious symbols. Wilderness in its evocation of the sublime calls attention to this situation and thereby serves as a symbol of reorientation.
