#SymbolismSaturday The Quaich. The what? A Quaich, also known as a loving cup, is thought to have its origins in the mid 16th century. It is a 2 handled drinking vessel, and the design is thought to be so that the host offers a drink to a guest, who cannot reach for a sword, as he is holding the cup in both hands! It was first used at a wedding in 1589 by King James VI offering wine to his bride Anne. It symbolises trust and nurturing. Couples can choose whatever drink they like, or a blend of their favourites! Champagne, spring water, wine – the choice is yours. Why not have red and white wine in your loving cup to give a lovely blush wine? I usually add this to a ceremony after the vows, as it is your first action as husband and wife. You can also add a feeding a small piece of cake or bread to one another to this ceremony too. It makes a wedding or vow renewal ceremony very special – and photographers love it! Ogden Nash, the poet famous for witty doggerel verse, wrote, To keep your marriage brimming, With love in the loving cup, Whenever youre right, admit it. Whenever youre wrong - shut up!
