Syracuse in the 1960’s…There were a few suburban “strip plazas” in the area consisting mostly of specialty stores, but most so called “anchor stores”, the large department stores, were located downtown…This fact was the main force driving consumer traffic there…Comingled with the department stores was what seemed like an endless array of “mom and pop” businesses that could easily be supported by the local economy then…Gas was $.30 a gallon, bus fare was $.35, a movie ticket was $1.00 and a top-selling record vinyl album (pre-CD) could be had for $2.50…Having a spare $3.00-$5.00 in your pocket for spending cash in those days was considered a decent amount of mad money…Whether you took the bus downtown, drove yourself or had your parents drop you off, if you had extra spending cash during a trip downtown, WHAT did you spent it on and WHERE did you spend it?...
