System voltages. What do you use? Some modellers stick with lower tension e.g. 6-8 volts, especially for smaller models. Others prefer 12 volts or higher especially for larer boats. I think in the days of older battery technology, there was a lot of benefit in higher voltage, as the current supply of those packs was often modest and increasing voltage enabled power levels to be increased. However with modern lithium packs, capable of reliably supplying quite awesome levels of current without difficulty that argument is becoming moot. High quality brushed motors from the likes of Buhler, Maxon, Portescap etc. tend to be wound for 12 volts or more. However many modellers seem to be sniffing around brushless motors. These work happily on low or higher voltages, you just select the appropriate KV. Lower system voltage opens up a wider choice of motors for scale subs. In addition if you run a BEC, and its a linear model, you will be burning off a lot less heat if running say 2S lipo or Lifepo4. Quite a lot of modern servos are designed for powering directly off 2s lipo, so that almost eliminates the need for a BEC, although you would need watch out for other electronics in the system.
