TABANKA DJAZ – “Depois do Silêncio” (After the Silence) the - TopicsExpress

TABANKA DJAZ – “Depois do Silêncio” (After the Silence) the new album Tabanka Djaz, originally from Guinea-Bissau, teamed up in 1988 and, in less than a year, saw both their domestic and international recognition soar to such heights that shortly after completing a tour of the USA they decided to record their first album under the name “Tabanka” (1990). The path to success of a band, now in its quarter-century of existence, was thus inaugurated. While touring extensively in Angola, Mozambique, Senegal, France, Luxembourg, Holland, USA, Cape Verde, among other countries, Tabanka Djaz presented their fans with new hits with the albums “Indimigo” (1993) and “Sperança” (1996). The latter album laid the foundations of their career as it reached forty thousand copies sold, effectively earning them Silver, Gold and Platinum records, awarded by the “Associação Fonográfica Portuguesa” (Portuguese Phonographic Association). With “Sperança” (1996) the band got nominated for Ngwomo Africa, the equivalent of the Grammys in the African continent. In 1999, at the invitation of Martinho da Vila, they participated in the “Lusofonia” project and consolidated their status, especially as ambassadors of Gumbé, a musical genre native to the region of Bissau. In 2002 the group released “Sintimento”, in which notables such as Martinho da Vila and the guinean guitarist Tony Dudu collaborated, an album teeming with fresh sounds. The loss of an important and dear member of the group (keyboardist Caló Barbosa in 2006), the financial crisis which engulfed the local music industry, and the return to Angola in 2008 of drummer Dinho Silva have all contributed to the eleven years of silence, which now come to an end thanks to the determination of the band in responding to the relentless requests of their widespread fanbase. In its present formation the band is composed of four members: singer/guitarist Mikas Cabral, bassist Juvenal Cabral and keyboardists Jânio Barbosa and Mimito Lopes. When playing live they are joined by drummer Cau Paris, percussionist Kabum, trombonist Lars Arens, saxophonist João Capinha, and Cláudio Silva on the trumpet. “Depois do Silêncio” (After the Silence) is released in the spirit of celebration of a quarter-century of existence commemorated in 2014 by Tabanka Djaz, reflecting their african soul in our present times and, of course, inspired by love, as revealed in the single “Foi Assim”.
