TAINTED SAINTS-detained stains The Saints of the thirteenth century were knee deep in the Blackest moments of the time, the Inquisition and destructive forces were unleashed to destroy periods of enlightenment of mankind..as my friend reminds me, with his favorite quote, a turd is easier to swallow if you sprinkle some sugar over it. SAINT FRANCIS of ASSISI (1182-October 4, 1226) Francis took his poverty followers to the abbot of Monte Subasio. In 1212, the abbot gave Francis the chapel of the Porziuncula with the condition that he always conserve it as the main church of the new order. Francis refused to accept the property of the small chapel and only consented to borrowing it. As a proof that the Porziuncula would continue as property of the Benedictines, Francis would send them every year, in recompense for the loan, a basket of fish taken from the neighboring stream. On their part, the Benedictines would, in turn, send them a barrel of oil. This same custom exists today between the Franciscans of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Benedictines of Saint Peter of Assisi. The Franciscan chapter held in Perugia in May 1322 declared : To say or assert that Christ, in showing the way of perfection, and the Apostles, in following that way and setting an example to others who wished to lead the perfect life, possessed nothing either severally or in common, either by right of ownership and dominium or by personal right, we corporately and unanimously declare to be not heretical, but true and catholic. By the bull Ad conditorem canonum of 8 December 1322, John XXII, declaring it ridiculous to pretend that every scrap of food given to the friars and eaten by them belonged to the pope, refused to accept ownership over the goods of the Franciscans in future and granted them exemption from the rule that absolutely forbade ownership of anything even in common, thus forcing them to accept ownership. And on 12 November 1323 he issued the short bull Cum inter nonnullos, which declared erroneous and heretical the doctrine that Christ and his apostles had no possessions whatever. John XXIIs actions thus demolished the structure that gave the appearance of absolute poverty to the life of the Franciscan friars. Fra Michele Berti, from Calci near Pisa, a member of the Ancona branch of Fraticelli, after preaching the Lenten course to his associates in Florence, was arrested 20 April, 1389, as he was about to leave the city, and was condemned by the Archbishop of Florence, Bartolomeo Oleari, to be burned at the stake. He died chanting the Te Deum , while his followers exhorted him to remain steadfast (30 April, 1389). To the end he maintained that John XXII had become a heretic by his four decretals ; that he and his successors had forfeited the papacy, and that no priest supporting them could absolve validly.Note: Bonaventures Legenda maior was approved as the only biography of Francis and all previous biographies were ordered to be destroyed. The son of Landulph, count of Aquino, St. Thomas Aquinas was born circa 1225 in Roccasecca, Italy, near Aquino, Terra di Lavoro, in the Kingdom of Sicily. Thomas had eight siblings, and was the youngest child. His mother, Theodora, was countess of Teano. Though Thomass family members were descendants of Emperors Frederick I and Henry VI, they were considered to be of lower nobility. He studied Aristotles work, he belived in the theory of collectivism.
