#TBT - FOR MY PIEDMONT AIRLINES AND US AIR FRIENDS - DO YOU REMEMBER THIS?? PI 1489 August 2, 1989 - [Just two days before Piedmont Airlines flew off into the sunset, and officially became US Air.] Aircraft Emergency Crash Landing Video a Piedmont Airlines Boeing 737-400 Plane Crash Lands with a Main Left Landing Gear Failure. On Wednesday August 2nd 1989 the crew of a Piedmont Airlines Boeing 737, on a routine flight from Washington to Charlotte N.C, with 100 passengers, could not lower the main left landing gear. The plane was diverted to Piedmont Triad International Airport at Greensboro N.C. for an emergency landing, after the instrument panel indicated that the landing gear had not locked. This airport was also the site of Piedmonts maintenance hangar. The video shows an incredible piece of flying skill from the pilot who circled the airport for more than an hour in an attempt to get all the gear down, and to use up fuel in the event of a crash fire. The cool head of the pilot, Captain Larry Fuda, was shown in an interview after the landing - the pilot said he turned off the anti lock brake system so he could blow the tires on the right side main gear to help increase drag, to assist keeping the plane travelling straight after the left side engine made ground contact. After the plane came to a standstill - passengers slid down emergency chutes, and ground crews sprayed foam on the engine -- there were no injuries. The cause of the incident was down to human error -- The left landing gear could not be lowered because a wheel chock had become lodged in the landing gear bay. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Phillip Powell said. The jetliner was not seriously damaged and was able to enter service with the airline. youtu.be/h3syTxW85Ik
