TBT ... Forty two years ago today I was four days away from my second Ball State graduation. I was working as a photographer/darkroom technician in the News Bureaus Photo Services with Ron Partain, Ed Self, Wayne K. Mock, and a host of beautiful ladies. The office and darkrooms were upstairs in the English Building but the portrait studio and 16mm film processor were in the basement. Ron sent me down to clean out the refrigerator and freezer where we kept our film stock. In the freezer I found an unopened box of 4x5 black and white infrared sheet film. It had an expiration date in the mid 1960s. I took it upstairs and told everyone I was going to give it a try. They all said, It wont work. I tried it anyway. I took the oldest camera in Photo Services inventory, a Speed Graphic, a film holder loaded with 2 sheets of film, a tripod and walked across campus to Benny. I took those two exposures and returned to the office. I decided to process the film one sheet at a time. The first one is still in the archives at Photo Services and has been used many times in many BSU publications. Because the first shot was such a success, I decided to play with the second sheet by solarizing or exposing it to a brief source of light during development. It is different than the first in that it appears to be both positive and negative while still maintaining some infrared qualities. I kept that negative and the first print I made from it. While its mate has had much exposure during these forty two years, this is the first time this exposure has been seen. It is my throw back Thursday post
