You must not be bitter. Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. It doesn’t do anything to the object of its displeasure. So use that anger. You write it. You paint it. You dance it. You march it. You vote it. You do everything about it. You talk it. Never stop talking it… Every human grouping whether theres just 2 people, a family, people in the neighborhood, people in the city, in a nation, a tribe, a species-People live in direct relation to the heroes and sheros they have… thats the wonderful thing about the icon, you continue to grow, and you develop courage-the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you cant practice any other virtue consistently… sometimes the iconic figure began as a pop culture… I know the title Iconoclast, it really means to break up the icon. An icon is that figure held high by the majority, and clastic means breaking. The iconoclast is he or she who breaks up old ideas. I have a feeling that you are going to lift up the icon, it is my intention to lift you up. Dr. Maya Angelou lifted us all up and touched every human grouping in the world through the power of her words. It is up to us to lift up our icons by carrying on their legacies, and to tell our own stories…I have always loved the idea of sitting with our elders in conversation, in the kind of knowledge one can never get through systemic education. We must seek to sit down and converse with our elders to not have our stories leave with them, and to know the truth in our history, so we do not have to depend on others to dissect our icons. Whether this will continue as a show, a film, or an organization -I hope we continue this format, for we can never run out of stories to tell. I am excited that Dave Chapelle is bringing together the children of Maya again in NY for a celebration worthy of her honor through our own works. We were listening and will never forget our Sweet Mother, Maya Angelou! Its been a decade since Dave Chappelle held his legendary Brooklyn Block Party (captured on the 2005 film directed by Michel Gondry), performing stand-up alongside music from a whos who of neo-soul and hip-hop artists. And with the 10th anniversary of that event approaching, Chappelle will be resurrecting that dual format for a three-date run of performances at Radio City Music Hall, from June 24th to 26th, accompanied by the Roots, Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes and DJ Premier – along with a full orchestra. rollingstone/music/news/dave-chappelle-recruits-the-roots-janelle-monae-for-radio-city-shows-20140528
