#TBT Jack Montalbano, 1945. The Navy–Notre Dame football rivalry is a historical and sacred tradition that came about during World War II. The University of Notre Dame opened a US Navy training center on campus as a way to bring in money to stay afloat during those hard times. As repayment on a debt of honor, Notre Dame extended an open invitation to Navy to play football. As it turns out, our grandfather Jack Montalbano attended this very training center, called the US Naval Reserve Midshipmens School at the University of Notre Dame, Class of 1945. archives.nd.edu/Capstan/Capstan-1945-07.pdf - Page 83
