#TBT Jack Montalbano, 1945. The Navy–Notre Dame football rivalry is a historical and sacred tradition that came about during World War II. The University of Notre Dame opened a US Navy training center on campus as a way to bring in money to stay afloat during those hard times. As repayment on a debt of honor, Notre Dame extended an open invitation to Navy to play football.
