TE AKAU’S READY TO RUN David writes: The Ready to Run Sale was an exciting sale for Te Akau this year. Concluding today at Karaka, the sale saw me purchase some stunning young horses and they are already proving hugely popular. There was a colt I was just so keen to buy and yes we got him on my final bid! The Savabeel/Royal Show colt could well be another Te Akau Derby contender and I secured him for $250,000 plus GST. This year at the New Zealand Cup Carnival, Te Akau finished second in both the Group 1 NZ 2000 and Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas – it is frustrating running second and I believe that this colt can go one better in the 2000 Guineas next year. The reason I am so happy about this colt also illustrates the ups and downs in racing. Earlier in the year, a good friend of mine rang me to see if the Savabeel/Royal Show colt was available as I had purchased him at the Karaka Premier Sale. He explained that he wanted to race him in Asia where he lived. I was happy to sell him of course and when we broke him in, I was quite sad – why? Our staff rated him as one of the best yearlings and it was in many ways so disappointing to know that he would not race from our stable, heading to another country for his racing career. Then in June, my client rang to tell me that his business had taken a huge loss on an international transaction and he wanted to sell the colt. I had just finished selling about 60 young horses and we couldn’t think of anyone who was still looking to invest so, after discussion, he instructed me to enter him into the Ready to Run Sale. So my client is happy that he has some return coming back to him and we have a colt that we really wanted to keep in the stable. So popular has this colt been – he sold in 20 minutes! Shares in our Te Akau horses always fly out of the window and it is heart-breaking to see people miss out on this type of quality young horse. You need to be quick off the mark! If you did miss out on the Savabeel colt however we also have another stunning colt who you should quickly grab a part of – he is by Fastnet Rock out of stakes’ winning British mare …. read more … He is another lovely individual with a super pedigree – and at $200,000 plus GST this colt was unbelievable value. Fastnet Rock is the greatest sire currently standing in Australia at present and this colt’s first two dams are both stakes’ winners in England. He has an unbelievable international pedigree and is a very classy colt who I was really taken with when we saw him breeze up at Te Rapa last month. I like buying horses that impress me with a good attitude and most importantly, I like horses with an impressive galloping action as against ones that go the fastest times and are pushed out to achieve it. This colt went to the post working beautifully under a good hold and could have gone significantly quicker. Tonight he has gone to our Matamata stable to start work and we would like to think that he could be ready to go to the trials in January and race in February/March. He has 2000 Guineas written all over him. A 10% share in this colt is $20,000 plus GST or a 5% share would be $10,000 plus GST. This colt is featured in the video and mark my words – he too will sell like hot cakes – already 55% has been snapped up so be quick – email Karyn today karyn@teakauracing or call her on 07 825 4701. I also bought a gorgeous Shamoline Warrior filly who we hope to go one better with in the 1000 Guineas next year – she has been purchased by a long standing client of Te Akau. The other two horses purchased by me were for Fortuna Syndicators, a Postponed colt for $65,000 and a Stratum colt who was knocked down to me for $87,500. So five horses bought in total – and I am delighted with the calibre of each! https://youtube/watch?v=utOhrMkWBsA&list=UU3OtreNz4Vs9giCLW4hBNEw On Monday we will be staging our North Island Owners’ Day at our stable and we will parade the Fastnet Rock colt. However if you are keen to be involved please get in touch with Karyn immediately as I am sure the shares in this colt will be mostly sold by Monday!
