TEAMS and FRIENDS: Bismillah. Just for academic purposes, lets tackle VOLCANIC ERUPTION; some pointers on what to do before, during ERUPTION AND DURING ASFALL EVENT. A volcanic eruption is the abrubt occurrence of a forceful discharge of volcanic materials and stream, In the Philippines, we have identified 220 volcanoes and registered 22 as active. Before Eruption • Plan ahead. Have emergency supplies, food and water stored. • Plan an evacuation route away from rivers, streams that may carry mud or debris flow. • Keep a transistorized radio and flashlight with spare batteries, emergency cooking equipment, candies, matches and first aid kit handy in case of emergency. • If there is eruption predicted, monitor the TV or radio for evacuation information. Follow the advice given by authorities. • There are maps that show which places will be endangered by volcanic hazards. Before a volcanic eruption occurs, it is best to get such a map for additional information. Follow the warnings and precautions stated therein, because these can save your life. During Eruption • Evacuate immediately from the volcano area to avoid flying debris, hot gases and lava flows. • Add a pair of goggles and a disposable breathing mask for each member of the family in the emergency kit. • Residents living around an erupting volcano face volcanic hazards – pyroclastic flows, ashfall and lahars. • Hazard maps show areas likely to be affected. These are available from proper authorities prior to eruption. Follow all advisories and warnings. • Avoid the declared permanent danger zones in your locality. Also, rivers where hazardous volcanic materials can flow should be avoided. During Ashfall • Don’t panic, stay calm. • If outside, seek shelter; use a mask or handkerchief/cloth. • If at work, go home if possible before ash begins to fall. If ash is already falling, stay indoors until the heavy ash has settled. • Unless it is an emergency, do not use the telephone. • Stay tuned to the radio for information on ashfall. RESCUE 1
