TEARS OF A COP I have been where you fear to be. I have seen what you fear to see. I have done what you fear to do. All these things Ive done for you. I am the one you lean upon. The one you cast your scorn upon. The one you bring your troubles to, All these people Ive been for you. The one you ask to stand apart. The one you feel should have no heart. The one you call the officer in blue. But I am human, just like you. And through the years Ive come to see That I am not what you ask of me. So take this badge and take this gun. Will you take it? Will anyone? And when you watch a person die, And hear a battered baby cry. Then so you think that you can be All those things you ask of me IM A POLICEMAN Im a policeman, Oh why? you may ask. Its not that the pay is well worth the task. Its something deep down, its something inside. Its not just a job where youre there for the ride. The dangers we face, we know theyre for real. But its not just a job, its something you feel. Were out on the beat, its late at night. This is the time when families fight. Shouting and cursing, then comes a hit. A loud screaming child, a mad raging fit. We come on the scene theres not a set play. We have to assess with our fears pushed away. Theres darting eyes and another door. Can we see all the people or are there more? A bang and a crash come from the back. Is someone else there to take a crack? We take control but its never easy. The mess and the people can make you feel queasy. We return to the beat and hope its all right. But we know well be back for the very next fight. A stop light runner and a simple chase. But we never know what we may face. Another bad drunk? A kid on a high? Or something much worse to give us a try? We cant take it easy, we cant take a chance. Always a new tune, always a new dance. Theres racial tensions and rights to uphold. We have to show patience but yet appear bold. Its easier to say that all must be fair. When youre not on the street, when youre not the one there. Those feelings of pressure we must put aside. With our actions up front and keeping our pride. Its harder on family than it is on me. Their imagined worst fear are all that they see. Im on the job and handling it well. But theyre safe at home imagining hell. When the telephone rings and its late at night. They wake in a sweat with a terrible fright. But their awful thoughts I must leave at the station. Cause they might dull my senses and force hesitation. So why do I do it? Where is the joy? Theres people who smile, a found little boy. Theres laughter and friendship with people who care. Theres knowing a difference just cause were there. Theres sunshine and sadness and having the nerve. To get up each morning and say that I serve. John T. Sutton, March 1988, Dallas, Texas. I ASK Lord, I ask for courage; Courage to face and conquer my own fears... Courage to take me where others will not go. I ask for strength; Strength of body to protect others... Strength of spirit to lead others. I ask dedication; Dedication to my job to do it well... Dedication to my community to keep it safe. Give me, Lord, concern; For all those who trust me... And compassion for those who need me And, please, Lord, through it all; be at my side. Amen. Pray for the Men in Blue It takes a very special person to wear the blue. Most people do not understand what we do We made a commitment to protect and serve. We work hard to provide the safety you deserve. No normal shifts, not nine to five. We work 24/7 to keep you alive. Holidays and weekends don’t mean a thing. We work night and day, just give us a ring. Our loved ones and children pray every night. That we will return at the break of daylight. We carry guns and wear vests to help us get through. You couldn’t imagine some of the things we must do. We see accidents and blood and small children crying. We also see death and it’s not just old people dying. Abusive spouses and parents that don’t seem to care. These are just a few of the things, to make you aware. Drug dealers and drunks are a regular sight. We go to the bars for fight after fight. Responding to calls day after day. Not allowing our personal lives to get in the way. You complain all the time when you see us on a break. We just drive around in cars and oh, the money we make. Stop for a second and try to assess Who’s always there to clean up the mess. We do all we can to help and provide. To make you feel safe and secure inside. Please remember all of the things that we must do. And next time you pray, include the men in blue. ALL MY LIFE.... All my life, I wanted to be..... a person who makes a difference. I dedicated my entire being, to be the absolute best , at what I do. Day after day, I see death, I see life.. In its truest form, reality......its brutal. Mid shift, Im alone, my mind wonders, So many memories flipping the pages, hard to let go the visions.. To think, the little amount I am paid, but that doesnt matter, I can make a difference. For you... your children..... me ....my children. Thugs come and go, oh not another domestic. A bruised face, a crying child, a gangster dead in the gutter.. Another report, under the microscope, its not written.. it wasnt done... A fellow officer...losing their life, How many times, must we die,,, All in the name of humanity... One life is given, so that many may live... Doesnt seem fair.... Sun chases the night away, tour of duty finished, Theres my love, waiting by the door, Kissing me, I love you, off to work I must go... Children following, smiling as the door closes.... All my life, I wanted to make a difference... To be an Officer in Law Enforcement... Finding out, its a faith, not a job...... Cant leave it at the office.... Forever imprinted, in my heart and mind.... In my life, I have made a difference..... I AM THE OFFICER I have been where you fear to be I have seen what you fear to see I have done what you fear to do All these things I have done for you I am the person you lean upon The one you cast your scorn upon The one you bring your troubles to All these things Ive been for you The one you ask to stand apart The one you feel should have no heart The one you call in blue But Im a person, just like you And through the years Ive come to see That I am not always what you ask of me So take this badge, take this gun Will you take it? .....
