THE ACCIDENT: Today a particular memory that I had repressed came back. I remember being 12 years old and my mother dropped me to school and as I was crossing the street neither her or me saw the car speeding down barreling toward me and it happened so fast in a split second and I was hit and thrown some 12 feet and landed on my face. I knocked out 2 of my front teeth and cut my lips severely. My mom watched in horror the scene playing out and she was screaming. Thankfully I had no broken bones. I pointed to my teeth and my mom said, your dad can fix it. I was transported to the hospital and I was very scared. The doctor sew up my lips and 2 weeks later my father who was a dentist repaired my teeth. It was like if I never lost them! I saw his love and passion for his work by the results. I saw my mothers concern for me and my well-being and I was happy. A month later my mom brought in 2 strangers. I asked who are they? She said it was the guys who hit you they came to apologize but I want them taken to court! My mom asked do u want to see them? I said sure. They came in looking so worried and shaking. They were young , no older than late 20s. My mom asked me you want to go to court? I said no, let them go. The young men looked so shocked. They thanked me and said it was an accident, and they hadnt seen me. I nodded and smiled. My mom looked at me with surprise and then she said hesitantly to them, Go. Later, my mom asked me why? I said forgiveness is better. I am alive and thankful. I am sure they learned their lessons. I told my mom, you also taught me by your example. I have seen u crying and hurt but still you forgave time after time.. I miss my mom now more than ever. She is gone. I know she is smiling up there. Dorcas Leroy: 1925-1995 #Tribute
