Exactly a year, a month, a week and a day after Propaganda Magazine’s November 22, 2013 debut on FACEBOOK, the page reached the 20,000-like milestone on Jan. 2nd 2015. That magical number equals the peak distribution of the magazine in the mid to late ‘90s, and is testimony to its enduring appeal with the gothic flock. Moreover, it’s been 33 years since the release of Propaganda’s premier issue in Jan. 1982. And what an odyssey it has been, traversing the twenty years of its print-run, a dozen years as a favorite topic of multiple books on the gothic subculture, and finally as a FACEBOOK phenomenon. If I had to sum it all up with one succinct expression it would be “the agony and the ecstasy” – the agony of toil, worry and tribulation, and the ecstasy of achievement, notoriety and adventure. From Xeroxed DIY fanzines to slick cutting edge periodicals to the marvel of social networking, Propaganda owes its very existence and success to hard work and dedication, and to devoted staff members and fans. Looking back, with a mixture of satisfaction and fatigue, I realize that it could not have happened any other way. Time marches on, and so does Propaganda.
