THE DIFFICULTY with most vertical gardens, especially the DIY varieties, is that the plant roots have too small an area for good development. Add the need of most vertical gardens for frequent watering because the small volume of soil limits the volume and retention of soil moisture, and the need to frequently feed the garden on account of the limited amount of nutrients held in a small body of soil, and you have a good idea that can quickly each its productivity limitations. The photo shows the root development that an be attained when there is sufficient volume of soil. The commercially-available vGarden array has a soil reservoir behind the growing trays that retains moisture and plant nutrients and provides the growing space for proper root development. The vGarden designer, Steve Batley — landscape architect and permaculture educator — is seen here with the arrays on the garage wall at the Barrett House community education centre at Barrett Place in Randwick. The plant is a basil, a number of which occupied the top growing tray and which have since been harvested and eaten, perhaps converted into a tasty pesto. https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10151812449524175&set=a.493250159174.270639.46128279174&type=1&theater
