THE DUMP DOG PROJECT I had been aware of the so-called DUMP DOG problem for some time in Greece,sadly it isn’t an isolated occurrence. It wasn’t until more recently however, when the often grim and depressing FB posts of a local lady here made me sit up and take more attention, that I decided that I could no longer sit and weep at the photos that upset me so and that I should try and take positive steps to helping out any way I could. What is the situation? At a now abandoned rubbish dump site approximately a 25 minutes drive from where I live, there are at least 50 dogs fighting for survival on a daily basis despite horrific odds. The majority of these dogs are strays that headed to the rubbish dump seeing it as a source of food, other are dogs that have been dumped there unceremoniously, others are second and third generation. Needless to say, there are always new arrivals... Up until about a month ago, this was a working dump. Rubbish trucks emptied their loads there, often injuring dogs in the process, sometimes inadvertently, but other times maliciously. Gypsies would also scavenge through the heaps of rubbish and would not think twice about going out of their way to abuse any dog nearby in the process. The location of the dump is somewhat remote and in a mountainous area, sounds idyllic, but it is also the perfect place for hunting enthusiasts to practise their shooting skills on the group of dogs that sit as easy prey.... Whatever way you look at it, these dogs are easy targets. The good news is that this rubbish dump has now been closed officially, and this means gypsies no longer visit the site and that can only be good. The rubbish trucks still arrive daily to transfer their loads from their small sized trucks to larger trucks to be transported elsewhere. However, the local council after having covered a lot of the rubbish, with soil, then set light to the mass that remained. This fire still smolders one month after the event causing unimaginable health problems for the dogs there. It is no surprise to find a dog that seemed healthy one day, dead the next. So many of these dogs have respiratory problems and eye and nasal discharges. Puppies born at the moment tend not to live for long. The fumes are intoxicating, much depends on the wind direction, but imagine being there 24/7 like these dogs are. Hopefully, that fire will extinguish itself at some point in the near future (where is the rain when you need it?) so that will be one less thing to worry about. Many of the dogs are untrusting of people and I’m sure they all have their harrowing tales. My friend Foteini visits them on a daily basis (come rain or shine, snow or fog - 365 days of the year) - she beeps her horn on approaching and they know that food is about to be served! She feeds dogs en route to the rubbish tip too, knowing where certain groups are to be found and being their only life-line. She is their only friend in the world. 20 kilos of dog biscuits is needed each day to feed these dogs (there are another 20 or so based elsewhere waiting to be rehomed) – and tinned food or another treat is used to disguise medicine that needs to be given. Many of the dogs approach warily, keeping their distance not passing the chicken-wire fence - but over the space of 30 minutes, dogs of all shapes and sizes venture up from the depths of the dump for their daily sustenance. It’s simple, if Foteini doesn’t feed them, they go without, if she doesn’t have the money to buy food for that day, they go without. Food and medicine is provided form Foteini’s own pocket, other than a handful of donations that come in every now and then. If a dog needs veterinary treatment, she pays for it, slightly subsidized, but not noticeably so. With most dogs being wary, most of them are not neutered. It is no mean task doing all that is required as a one-woman-band and funding it yourself too! However, Foteini has removed over 300 dogs from this hell-hole over the past 5 years and has had many sterilised but still so many of these same dogs reach an untimely death because of the circumstances in which they find themselves... I come from a country where animal abuse/neglect is also a reality; the big difference is that we have a wonderful network to turn to in the form of animal shelters/refuges, subsidised veterinary services etc. .. No such thing here! Each town probably has a state dog pound, otherwise known as a death camp for strays collected from the street – one of our own dogs was chosen/saved from there. And then there may be a local animal charity that does their best to sterilize and vaccinate stray dogs to keep them out of the pound. But when an animal is found injured or in need of help, maybe brought in by a member of the public, the charity needs to find a willing individual to take that animal into their home while it convalesces and then the animal will be put out on the street to fend for itself – unless it is one of the lucky few that finds a new home. Our second dog came to us in the same way after having been run over in a nearby village (not to mention the fact that it had been shot at some point) - it took him (Milo) a long time to trust us, after looking after him for 6 weeks, how could I let him loose to a life of hunger and hardship on the street again? It’s simple, I couldn’t and we kept him – but you can’t keep every stray animal that crosses your path. Even the most ardent animal lover has been broken in this country – yielding to the unbelievable circumstances since they cannot afford neither financially nor psychologically to take in every waif and stray. What do we want to achieve with The Dump Dog Project? In a perfect world, these dogs need to be sterilised , given medical treatment and moved to a caring refuge that doesn’t exist. Nor is it likely to when so much of the infrastructure required is missing here. There is a group of us here which will use the means known to us to explain our cause to the higher echelons of (European) society. In reality, at least for the short term until a better solution is found (I’m all ears!), we need funds so a sum of money/kitty can exist for Foteini for food and vet bills. This problem can no longer be on the shoulders of one person who not only devotes her daily life to these dogs but much of her limited income too. A lot of food is bought «on the slate» - that, is not a long-term agreement. This plight extends also to anybody who finds an animal in need or indeed finds themselves with an unwanted litter of puppies/kittens – what do they do? There is no animal refuge/shelter to turn to as I mentioned earlier, so the easy solution is to dump the litter (and maybe the unsterilised mother) with Foteini . ΣΚΥΛΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΣΚΟΥΠΙΔΙΩΝ Είχα αντιληφθεί το λεγόμενο ¨σκύλοι των σκουπιδιών ¨ πρόβλημα στην Ελλάδα εδώ και καιρό εξαιτίας δυστυχώς της μεγάλης έκτασής του. Τώρα τελευταία όμως, τα αποτροπιαστικά σχόλια στο FB μιας συντοπίτισσας μου τράβηξαν την προσοχή και αποφάσισα ότι δεν θα μπορούσα να συνεχίσω απλά να λυπάμαι βλέποντας μια φωτογραφία αλλά έπρεπε να κάνω κάποια βήματα για να βοηθήσω με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο θα μπορούσα. Ποια είναι η κατάσταση? Στην χωματερή που αυτή τη στιγμή έπαψε να χρησιμοποιείται, περίπου μια διαδρομή 25 λεπτών από εκεί που μένω, υπάρχουν τουλάχιστον 5 σκύλοι που προσπαθούν να επιζήσουν κάτω από αντίξοες συνθήκες. Η πλειονότητα αυτών των ζώων είναι αδέσποτα τα οποία κατευθύνθηκαν προς τον σκουπιδότοπο προς αναζήτηση τροφής, άλλα που εγκαταλείφθηκαν αστείρωτα και άλλα που είναι απόγονοι των παραπάνω. Δεν χρειάζεται να πούμε ότι συνεχώς εμφανίζονται νέες αφίξεις… Μέχρι και ένα μήνα πριν, η χωματερή λειτουργούσε. Τα απορριμματοφόρα άδειαζαν τα σκουπίδια εκεί, συχνά τραυματίζοντας σκυλιά στο δρόμο καμιά φορά και εσκεμμένα. Ρομά διαρκώς έψαχναν τα σκουπίδια συμπεριφερόμενοι βάναυσα στα ζώα με την πρώτη ευκαιρία. Η τοποθεσία της χωματερής είναι απόμακρη και σε ορεινό μέρος η οποία ενώ ακούγεται, κάθε άλλο από ειδυλλιακή είναι, γιατί αποτελεί χώρο συγκέντρωσης κυνηγών οι οποίοι εξασκούνται στο σημάδι στο κοπάδι των σκύλων… Από όποια πλευρά και να το κοιτάξεις, αυτοί οι σκύλοι αποτελούν τον εύκολο στόχο. Τα καλά νέα είναι ότι η χωματερή αυτή είναι τώρα επισήμως κλειστή, το οποίο σημαίνει ότι οι Ρομά έχουν σταματήσει να την επισκέπτονται. Τα απορριμματοφόρα συνεχίζουν να πηγαίνουν εκεί μόνο για να αδειάσουν το φορτίο τους σε μεγαλύτερα φορτηγά τα οποία το μεταφέρουν σε άλλη τοποθεσία. Οι τοπικές αρχές αφού σκέπασαν με χώμα το μεγαλύτερο μέρος έβαλαν φωτιά στα σκουπίδια. Αυτή η φωτιά συνεχίζει να καίει εδώ και ένα μήνα με τις αναθυμιάσεις να προκαλούν τρομερά προβλήματα υγείας στους σκύλους. Είναι σύνηθες φαινόμενο ένας φαινομενικά υγιής σκύλος τη μια μέρα, να κείτεται νεκρός την επόμενη. Μεγάλος αριθμός αυτών των σκύλων αντιμετωπίζει σοβαρά αναπνευστικά προβλήματα και αποκρίσεις από τα μάτια και τη μύτη. Τα μικρά που γεννιούνται δεν καταφέρνουν να μεγαλώσουν. Τα τοξικά αέρια που αναδύονται μεταφέρονται ανάλογα με τη διεύθυνση του ανέμου, αλλά οι σκύλοι που μένουν 24/7 στο χώρο αυτό είναι προς το παρόν δίχως ελπίδα. Η φωτιά κάποια στιγμή θα σβήσει (με τη βοήθεια κάποιας βροχής!) και με αυτήν θα εξαλειφθεί τουλάχιστον ένα από τα προβλήματα. Πολλά από τα σκυλιά δεν εμπιστεύονται τους ανθρώπους μάλλον επειδή κουβαλούν αποτροπιαστικές αναμνήσεις. Η φίλη μου Φωτεινή τα επισκέπτεται καθημερινά (με βροχή ή καλοκαιρία, με χιόνι ή ομίχλη – 365 μέρες το χρόνο) Πατώντας την κόρνα πλησιάζοντας αυτά γνωρίζουν ότι το γεύμα έφτασε! Δίνει τροφή σε σκυλιά και κατά μήκος της διαδρομής γνωρίζοντας τις ακριβείς τοποθεσίες των ζώων των οποίων αποτελεί την μοναδική υποστήριξη. 20 κιλά από κροκέτες χρειάζονται καθημερινά (υπάρχουν και άλλα 20 σε άλλη τοποθεσία τα οποία περιμένουν να βρουν σπίτι) ενώ τροφή από κονσέρβα ή κάποια άλλη λιχουδιά χρησιμοποιείται για την συγκάλυψη φαρμάκων όταν χρειάζεται. Πολλά από τα σκυλιά πλησιάζουν με δυσπιστία, αρνούμενα να περάσουν το φράκτη από συρματόπλεγμα αλλά τελικά μέσα σε 30 λεπτά σκυλιά όλων των ειδών ξεπηδούν από παντού. Τα πράγματα είναι πολύ απλά : αν η Φωτεινή δεν τα ταΐσει μένουν χωρίς τροφή, αν δεν έχει τα χρήματα, πάλι μένουν χωρίς τροφή για εκείνη την ημέρα. Η τροφή και τα φάρμακα βαρύνουν οικονομικά αποκλειστικά την Φωτεινή και υπάρχουν μόνο κάποιες σποραδικές, καλοδεχούμενες πάντα, δωρεές. Εάν κάποιος σκύλος χρειάζεται ιατρική βοήθεια αυτή παρέχεται με κάποια έκπτωση και το υπόλοιπο ποσό καλύπτεται αποκλειστικά από την Φωτεινή. Παρ΄ όλο που η Φωτεινή τα τελευταία 5 χρόνια έχει καταφέρει να απομακρύνει πάνω από 300 σκύλους από αυτή την τρύπα και έχει στειρώσει ένα μεγάλο αριθμό, πολλά από αυτά συνεχίζουν να βρίσκουν φρικτό θάνατο κάτω από αυτές τις δύσκολες συνθήκες... Κατάγομαι από μια χώρα στην οποία υπάρχει κακομεταχείριση και αδιαφορία αλλά συγχρόνως υπάρχει και ένα δίκτυο βοήθειας : καταφύγια ζώων, επιδοτούμενη κτηνιατρική βοήθεια κλπ. Αυτά εδώ απουσιάζουν! Κάθε πόλη έχει το δικό της κυνοκομείο στο οποίο μαζεύονται τα αδέσποτα τα οποία μένουν κάτω από δύσκολες συνθήκες – ο δικός μας σκύλος είναι ένας από εκεί. Στην συνέχεια υπάρχει κάποιο φιλοζωικό σωματείο το οποίο κάνει προσπάθεια να στειρώσει, να εμβολιάσει και να κρατήσει μακριά τα ζώα από το κυνοκομείο. Όταν κάποιο ζώο τραυματιστεί ή χρειάζεται βοήθεια (συχνά το φέρνει κάποιος πολίτης) το σωματείο ψάχνει να βρει κάποιον ο οποίος θα φροντίσει το ζώο προσωρινά κατά την ανάρρωσή του και έπειτα το ζώο θα βγει ξανά στο δρόμο – εκτός αν είναι από τα λιγοστά τυχερά τα οποία βρίσκουν νέο σπίτι. Ο δεύτερός μας σκύλος ήρθε με αυτό τον τρόπο, τραυματισμένος από αυτοκίνητο σε ένα κοντινό χωριό (και χτυπημένος με αεροβόλο…) – του πήρε (Milo) πολύ χρόνο για να μας εμπιστευτεί και αφού τον περιποιηθήκαμε για 6 εβδομάδες δεν μπορούσαμε να τον αφήσουμε να γυρίσει ξανά στους δρόμους. Τον κρατήσαμε – αλλά δυστυχώς δεν μπορείς να κρατήσεις όποιο αδέσποτο χρειάζεται βοήθεια. Η κατάσταση εδώ είναι τόσο δύσκολο να αντιμετωπιστεί οικονομικά και ψυχολογικά ακόμα και από άτομα με απέραντη αγάπη για τα ζώα. Τι προσπαθούμε να κάνουμε με το σχέδιο δράσης ¨ΣΚΥΛΟΙ ΣΤΟ ΣΚΟΥΠΙΔΟΤΟΠΟ¨ ? Σε ένα τέλειο κόσμο, αυτά τα ζώα θα έπρεπε να στειρωθούν, να λάβουν ιατρική βοήθεια και να μεταφερθούν σε κάποιο καταφύγιο το οποίο όμως δεν υπάρχει και δεν πρόκειται να υπάρξει λόγω των σοβαρών ελλείψεων υποδομών. Μία ομάδα από εμάς θα προσπαθήσει να κάνει γνωστό το πρόβλημα σε όλους που ενδιαφέρονται και είναι πρόθυμοι να βοηθήσουν. Στην πραγματικότητα, μέχρι να βρεθεί κάποια καλύτερη λύση, χρειαζόμαστε χρήματα για να αντιμετωπίσει η Φωτεινή τα τρέχοντα έξοδα (τροφή και κτηνίατρο). Αυτή η κατάσταση δεν πρέπει να αντιμετωπίζεται καθημερινά μόνο από ένα άτομο το οποίο αφιερώνει όχι μόνο χρόνο αλλά και ένα μεγάλο μέρος του οικογενειακού του εισοδήματος. Πολύ από την τροφή αγοράζεται λιανικώς χωρίς την παροχή ειδικών συμφωνιών και εκπτώσεων. Το πρόβλημα εντείνεται και από το γεγονός ότι κάποιοι που βρίσκονται να κατέχουν ένα αριθμό από σκυλάκια ή γατάκια που δεν θέλουν να κρατήσουν, στρέφονται στην Φωτεινή, συχνά αφήνοντας μαζί τους και την αστείρωτη μητέρα. Μπορείς να βοηθήσεις ? 1) Αν μένεις κοντά μπορείς να δωρίσεις τροφή – μπορώ να την παραλάβω από κάποιο κεντρικό σημείο της Καβάλας ή να μου την φέρεις.
