In retrospect, the 2011 Aljazeera timbergate scandal that engulfed Chief Alhaji Sam-Sumana was an orchestration by some of the state enemies of progress that found him guilty and convicted in the court of public opinion. These powerful men and women who wanted to see this fine gentleman out of national politics depended on fabricated reports, lies, false speculations, cooked up facts and cunning propaganda carefully designed to take advantage of perceived public gullibility by then. Unfortunately, their dubious and evil plots have today come to hunt some of them. TIMBERGATE TAKES A NEW POLITICAL TWIST --- BY MARTIN SAFFA KOKOFELE In the year 2011 the International station Aljazeera carried a documentary about the export of timber out of Sierra Leone involving the Vice President. Within a week the media and the public were baying for the gentleman’s head. He had been judged, found guilty and convicted in the court of public opinion, simply because there were powerful forces working underground to see this fine gentleman out of politics. Those who rose to the VP’s defence at the time were seen as people who had either been paid or were doing so because of primitive loyalty. There were powerful forces at work then. For that documentary was a product of a carefully orchestrated conspiracy to bring a good man down. Evidence: the documentary, to begin with, did not show the viewers any timber in containers going out of the country by land, sea or air. Secondly, those who did the documentary made the viewers believe that the VP had received money from the Aljazeera journalists posing as businessmen in his office, when on careful examination the background was found to be another man’s office made to look like the office of the VP, through a technique known as montage (cut and paste, in simple language). The third reason is that the business registration certificate the ALJAZEERA team produced in court later did not have anything to do with timber. And yet they said they had gone to see the VP to help them facilitate the export of timber, for which they had registered. But thanks to God, who is always a God of Truth, the Vice President survived. Today there is a new twist in the timbergate story. The ex-Chief of Staff in the Office of the President was involved in a scandal of forgery and corruption concerning the authorization given to a certain business man to export THIRTY containers of timber out of the country. From 30 containers the figure rose to 400. At the time of the ALJAZEERA documentary in 2011, the ban on timber export had been temporarily lifted without exclusivity, which was still effective from State House, documented under the signature of the former Chief of Staff Dr. Kaifala Marrah when the Aljazeera team met with the VP. This is unlike the current situation wherein there is a ban on the export of timber. Yet still there is documentary evidence that more than 400 containers of timber have actually left the country, despite the ban. This recent timbergate scandal has not caused a political earthquake like the Aljazeera documentary did in 2011. The reason for this is that the 2011 scenario was orchestrated by powerful men in the All People’s Congress Party. One of these men hired and paid a TV reporter at SLBC to join the Aljazeera team. Two days before the documentary was shown, this fellow went out of the country. But before leaving he sent a text message to a friend stating that something ‘nasty’ about the VP would be shown on Aljazeera “in a few days time”. A carefully orchestrated conspiracy already had put paid mercenaries on standby to fan the flames of the timbergate scandal out of proportion, whether in the media or within political circles. And the public swallowed everything, hook line and sinker. The opposition also made political capital out of it. That was in 2011. Now in June 2014 another timbergate scandal has appeared from nowhere. The only difference this time is that it is not orchestrated. Nobody has hatched a conspiracy to see the back of the formal Chief of Staff (Or should we say Thief of Staff, courtesy of Lawyer Abdul Iscandri?) out of State House. It has taken the public by surprise and the public is yet to formulate a response. In Greek Mythology there was a Goddess called Nemesis. She was the Goddess of Vengeance. In Islamic theology there is something called ‘HAKEH’. The same concept in Budhism is called ‘KHARMA’. The Law of Kharma, like hakeh, says that whatever evil you do to others the same evil will come back to haunt you. You don’t have to belong to any religion to know that this is true. The Law of Kharma has come back to hunt those who hatched the timbergate plot against the Vice President in 2011. And ironically, it has started in the same area of timber. Those who were connected with that conspiracy in 2011 should not be happy about what has happened to the former Chief of Staff. Things have just begun to unfold! It appears that the Gods are angry. The God of Timber is angry. The God of Justice is angry. And the God of Morality is also angry. What moral justification was there to hound an honest man for timber when other people are doing more heinous things with unprocessed logs to enrich themselves at the expense of a starving nation? What are the people of Sierra Leone getting out of this timber export as revenue? Where is Aljazeera now in all of this? Or is it because there are untouchables and sacred cows that have the fiat to fleece this nation with impunity? Where also is the Anti-Corruption in all this? In 2011 we know that some people close to the Anti- Corruption had a keen interest in hounding the Vice President out of office because they actually set up a Commission of Inquiry to investigate two investigators who refused to name a very close associate of the VP that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was investigating in another timber matter in the Container Section of Ports. Incidentally these investigators were cleared of any wrong doing. But these same people were not satisfied. We know what they did to the two investigators. The Goddess of Vengeance has been let loose like a hunting dog. She is looking for all those who conspired to bring a good man down in 2011. That is a prophetic, not an idle statement.
