THE “FORGOTTEN” STARS OF RAWHIDE We talk on here about Gil Favor, Rowdy, Pete, wishbone, Mushy, Quince and Scarlet, but there are stars that the whole show was based on, the cattle themselves of course. I’m sure it must have taken some doing to bring in altogether that many steers. Can you imagine the confusion into the small brains of these four footed “stars”? Here they were herded up, forced to forge rivers, prodded into a stampedes just so a few men could pretend they were tending them! In fact I had read where it really wasn’t that easy to get them sent off into a stampede. And that the off screen cowboys had to litterly almost prod them into one. Even firing gun shots into the air wouldn’t set them off. From what I read I gather they had to dig a hole in the ground big enough to get into with a camera to film the stampedes. Actually maybe the cattle should be referred to as “beeves”. As that is what the crew on Rawhide referred to them as.
