"THE FORMER JUSTICE JOSEPH WOWO OF THE GAMBIA THAT THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT DOES NOT KNOW":The dismissal of Joseph Wowo, the acting Chief Justice of the Republic of The Gambia was widely reported by many online news media, several social network sites, Nigerian newspapers and in the Youtube videos that have two audio clips of Joseph Wowo openly demanding for a bribe from a foreign businessman in The Gambia that lost his court case over a land dispute. Who is truly Joseph Wowo in all reality? Joseph Wowo is a Nigerian-American with dual nationalities or citizenships. He was born in Nigeria, trained as a lawyer in Nigeria and relocated to The Gambia on his own accord in the late 1990s like the thousands of other Nigerian professionals did in their search for a greener pasture outside Nigeria. I was in The Gambia also between 1996 and 2002 where I met Joseph Wowo for the first time. This lawyer was hired by the The Gambia Justice Ministry as a senior state counsel or state prosecutor alongside with few other Nigerians and the West African nationals from Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Joseph Wowo also became a member of The Gambia Bar Association which was mandatory for any foreign trained lawyers to work and practice in The Gambia. Joseph Wowo relocated to the United States in 2002 and became a United States citizen few years later. He was then rehired from America by The Gambia government in 2007 as a high court judge where he rose rapidly to become the acting Chief Justice of the Republic of The Gambia before his final dismissal from his position last month by President Yahya Jammeh of The Gambia over an allegation of bribery and corrupt. No matter what the Nigerian government plans to do with Joseph Wowo, a Nigerian born citizen over his dismissal by The Gambia government, one thing stands out clearly.
