THE GOD OF ALL COMFORTStella Dhinakaran Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. (Psalm 27:10) The Lord says, O you afflicted one, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay your foundations with sapphires. I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of crystal, and all your walls of precious stones” (Isaiah 54:11,12). Today, everywhere we see people getting caught in problems in the family and living in misery. The Lord gives the above promise to each and every one who is in such pain. Yes, our God is the One who makes the comfortless stones colorful. He shows mercy to the fatherless. Since He is rich in mercy, He is the image of mercy and love towards everyone (Ephesians 2:4). He who is the personification of love remembers each one of us (Psalm 40:17). Perhaps you are unloved by everyone and are like an orphan in this world. There may not be a single person to understand your problems and show you love. The Lord tells you, who are in such state, My child, I, the Lord, remember you.’ Let us briefly meditate on how the Lord blesses and makes everyone, who has no comfort or comforter in this world, to shine: David, when he was humiliated and distressed in life prayed to the Lord saying, “…I am lonely and afflicted”(Psalm 25:16). Though David was a king chosen by God, he faced distressed situations (I Samuel 22:1,2). King Saul, whom David loved dearly, planned to kill him out of jealousy. At that situation, when he and the four hundred men with him returned from another place, they saw that the enemies had burnt Ziklag, their hometown, with fire and had taken their families as captives. Faced with this dire situation, David and his men wept bitterly. The men who were with him rose against him and spoke of stoning David. But he strengthened himself in the Lord his God (I Samuel 30:1-6) and cried out to Him in his agony. Yes, David looked up to the “Lord, his Hill” from where comes his help (Psalm 121:1,2). The Lord helped him and David overcame them and recovered all that he had lost and much more (I Samuel 30:19). These days, we see many people living in an abandoned and humiliated state. Particularly, many are in the pitiable state of being forsaken by their spouses, children or relatives. Many parents are heartbroken since they are left all alone in their old age as their children fail to look after them with love. Today, such kinds of problems are commonly seen in many families. My dear children who are in this state, like David, hold on to the Lord, saying, “The Lord is my refuge.” The Psalmist says, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me” (Psalm 27:10). The Lord will never ever leave you alone. He will carry you as a father carries his son and comfort you as a mother comforts her child. Prayer: Loving Lord Jesus, You have promised divine comfort to Your children. As Your beloved child, I look up to You for help in this time of my misery. Please remember Your promise and send me Your help and comfort me. Strengthen me as I hold on to You in faith. Help me to overcome my problems and recover all the blessings that I have lost. In Your matchless name I pray, Amen.
