THE HERO’S JOURNEY AS THE QUEST FOR WHOLENESS, Janet Kane 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., Jung Society Library $20 Nov. 8th - Friday In the mid-1980s, an employee at the Walt Disney Company was reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell when he wrote a memo to Disney executives explaining that Campbell had broken the “secret code’ of story: He had exposed the archetypal pattern that lies behind every story that was ever told. The producers at Disney started to use this information in subsequent now-classic films. We will unpack this “secret code” through examining the elements of the Hero’s Journey – a template of the development and transformation of the individual that is a key theme in literature, film, myth, and fairy tales. We will discuss the stages of the hero’s journey and identify the archetypal characters that appear, such as the Mentor, the Threshold Guardian, and the Trickster. Campbell believed that we are all heroes and that we can use these stories to inform and consciously guide our own journey. Janet Kane is a retired business consultant with a life long-interest in mythology, especially the work of C.G. Jung and Joseph Campbell. She uses archetypes found in literature, myths, fairy tales, and film in her consultations, courses, and workshops. She has taught at Mount Vernon College, The Jung Society of Washington, The Friends Wellspring Conference, and Washington College. She is a professional astrologer and founder of the Wisewoman Forum in Washington, D.C. She publishes a free, on-line newsletter, Janet’s Planets.
