THE IMPORTANCE OF BIBLICAL DISCERNMENT The Bible is filled with scriptures that tell how important it is to develop good discernment. To discern is to perceive, pick out, detect, recognize, or notice. It means having very good judgment. You want your children to judge between good friends and bad ones. But as they mature they should be able to judge between good friends and better friends. Thats harder. Discernment doesn’t just mean knowing the difference between black and white. It also means carefully choosing between similar shades of the same color. . 1 Cor 6:2-3 (ESV) “Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! “ . Christians should be very good at judging and exercising sound biblical discernment. Simply put, we should be MUCH harder to trick. A look at Heb 5:13-14 reveals two things: 1. Good discernment is necessary for maturity. 2. Discerning good from evil DOES NOT come naturally even for us. (SHOCKER) . Heb 5:12-14 (ESV) “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the BASIC PRINCIPLES of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a CHILD. But solid food is for the MATURE, for those who have their powers of discernment TRAINED BY CONSTANT PRACTICE to discern good from evil. . More to come. Stay tuned!
