THE INTERNSHIP By Ian Stumbo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn - TopicsExpress

THE INTERNSHIP By Ian Stumbo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reunite for the first time since The Wedding Crashers in the new release, The Internship. Wilson plays Nick and Vaughn plays Billy. Both Nick and Billy have been in the sales game for a very long time. When we first meet them they are trying to sell some very nice watches to a client only to learn their company has been closed down by their boss (John Goodman). There are no face to face sales anymore with all this technology, he tells them. Nick and Billy must face facts and try to find a new career. This leads to the main plot of The Internship with Nick and Billy becoming interns at Google. They have no idea what they are getting themselves into and this provides some very interesting scenes such as the fact they are the oldest interns there by several years to say the least. They are put into a group of young computer whiz’s who try to meet all the challenges put in front of them while contending with their two fellow group members who seem to know how to talk their way through anything. The Internship is full of neat celebrity cameos and Vaughn’s signature rapid fire dialogue really delivers throughout most of the movie. One of the funniest scenes is their interview done via a web cam at the children’s section of a library. Billy does everything he can to get them to meet the qualifications, including enrolling them in the University of Phoenix so they meet the student part of the requirement. The group that Billy and Nick are put with are a bunch of talented young actors who play characters with some interesting quirk to them. They are entertaining as a group but, unfortunately, we have seen this done before and in better circumstances. Each of the group members has a goal they are trying to reach in life and Nick and Billy act as mentors, of sorts, while trying to reach their ultimate goal of employment with Google. Some very funny moments though do come when Billy keeps giving the young group of teenagers pep talks by telling them the plot to the movie Flashdance. The Internship is certainly not a bad film but it is very clichéd most of the time. Nick meets a young girl who works at Google (Rose Byrne) and falls madly in love with her and Billy is the usual sidekick as played with Vince Vaughn’s usual appeal. Nothing we haven’t seen before. While not every movie needs to be unique, it is always nice to have some quality that makes your movie stand out. Vaughn is a co-writer on this film and it is nice to see him and Owe n Wilson back on the screen together. They make a great comedy duo and it’s too bad they don’t do more movies together. Throughout The Internship, my interest level went up and down at times. It has interesting characters, a good ending, enough laughs and is sentimental in the right places but the main plot feels contrived and overdone and there were more opportunities for even bigger laughs that weren’t taken. 2.5 stars/4 stars.
