THE MOURNER - Just having fun playing the mourner! (Its hard for me to look good when Im not smiling!) Did you know that during the early Christian thru the Renaissance eras, women were forbidden to act as professional mourners ? They traditionally used frame drums from the time of Egypt and often went into trances with the drumming and singing hence the church fathers felt it was a danger to their own powers. It was from the traditions of the Great Mother and deemed sacriligious to the patriarchial religions. Today in China and other countries there is still a tradition of the professional mourner. Now it has taken on more an aspect of theatre in some areas and the more and better the actions of the mourner, screaming, climbing into the open grave etc., the more beloved and popular the deceased was believed to be.
