THE NEW COBWEB COTTAGE: Hit some problems. A 70 foot Lombardy Poplar next to the cottage had lifted the founds with its roots. If we chopped them off it would leave the tree unsafe. I reluctantly agreed to its removal. Hired a very expensive Cherry Picker for two hours and got Benny and Benny, my favourite tree surgeons to attend. The tree has now gone, and will be dried and cut for winter fuel. There was very severe internal rot at about 30 feet, which could have dumped half a tree on the new roof!
