THE OTHER SIDE OF GOD We have had various descriptions of God by various people. Some aspects of His Person have been highlighted above others. This has greatly affected how people relate with Him. The Bible clearly reveal a lot about God. God is good, merciful, gracious, patient. He is God of love, of compassion. Many who see only this side of God tend to overlook the other side. This has led many people to take God for granted. They feel that God who is love cannot be tough at the same time. As a result of this lopsided view of God the fear of God is conspicuously absent in the church and in the society. I listened to a radio programme recently during which one of the discussants said that the God of love cannot allow a person to burn in hell fire for ever. He was apparently airing the view of the denomination that own the station. This view is a distortion of Bible truth. In every place Hell Fire is mentioned in the Bible, it is described as a place of everlasting torment. While it is true that God is the God of love, the Bible reveals that He is also the God of judgment, of justice, and a man of war (Exod.15:3). He makes alive and He kills (1Sam.2:6). He is a consuming fire (Heb.12:2). God has both the soft and the tough side. To present or believe only one side of God is wrong. The God who sits on the mercy seat today will one day sit on the Judgment seat. By then His mercy side would be laid aside as He judges those who have rejected His mercy. Come to think of it, why do people think God cannot be strict in judgment? If he destroyed a whole generation and spared only Noah in his time, if He destroyed the nation of Sodom and Gomorrah and spared only Lot and his two daughters, what makes us think that He cannot destroy the entire world if they refuse to serve Him?. Let us not presume upon God. Let us reflect on this as we begin this week. Have a great day.
