THE PSYCHOPATHOLOGY OF THE EVERYDAY CAR DRIVER - PART III Dear Mah Hui, Oh dear! You are so right when you write “what types of designs have been used and might work?” Of course I should have at least started to dig into that, but oops! I am working under an enormous time constraint on my illusive General Theory book, and to do it right I would really have to dig further into the topic, especially with some really talented traffic engineers to get a good short list of measures. In the meantime what I can offer is a quick shortlist as it come off the top of my mind and memory, and with more than a little help from US Institute of Transportation Engineers Traffic Calming Library. Off we go. Slow Street Architecture • Clear Entry Zone indications to slow speed area – not just signs also innovative street architecture at entry points which clearly get the message through to the entering motorist • Elimination of long straight lines • Elimination of smooth uniform surfaces that favor speeding • Speed humps • Speed tables (longer then humps) • Painted speed humps (visual messaging) • Pavement stripping • Street narrowing (real) • Visual street narrowing (Trompe-lœil ) • Overhanging trees • Narrow traffic lanes • Horizontal curvature • Weaving sections • Raised intersections • Raised crosswalks • Traffic circles • Chokers (narrow street by extending sidewalk or widening planting strip. Also called deviations, serpentines, reversing curves, twists, and staggerings) • Place deliberate bottlenecks • Using parked vehicles – whereon one side changing side at frequent intervals • Speed humps, tables and othe impediments (work with fire departments and emergency service) Electronic measures to slow traffic: • Add traffic lights • Remove Traffic lights (Replace with roundabouts of different strategies) • Traffic light timing (slow waves) • Traffic cameras Other • Introduce counter-sense cycling • Anything that favors eye contact (low speeds but also orientation of both parties. • “Real signage” (i.e., the “sign” is not something you read but something communicated by the architecture of the road) • Invite other slow speeders (cycling, pedestrians) into street in a visible and abundant manner • Play streets • Traffic wardens • Active law Enforcement • Children at Play signs # # # It is far from perfect but it is a start and I hope this will be at least a bit of help, and perhaps if any of the readers on this list would like to help improve this that would be excellent. And at one point I can add this to the website for all to see and profit from. PS. Mari Jussi from Tallinn just added the following: PPS article also summed up these issues just two weeks ago: pps.org/blog/how-to-restore-walking-as-a-way-of-life/. Thank you Mari (and Fred and Jay) All the very best,
