THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT: Tuesday, October 28th, 7:30pm @ James Bridges Theater. Produced while a student of Hungarian master Béla Tarr at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), Ramon Zürcher’s directorial debut was an Official Selection of The 2013 Berlin Film Festival. It has since garnered nearly unanimous critical praise, while screening in Los Angeles only once. In this vibrant work, the occasion of a family gathering in a small Berlin apartment provides the spatial vantage from which to observe the absurdity behind quotidian interactions. Within this carefully defined space, the mundane is choreographed with such care as to paradoxically drain and inflate the significance of our actions and interactions, highlighting the difficulty of communicating with one another, the limits of language and the emptiness of our actions. Filmed in near-real time, its inscribed naturalism playfully self-contradicts.
