THE TOWN OF WIELICZKA AND ITS HISTORIC BUILDINGS Wieliczka, known in the Middle Ages as Great Salt, received its charter in 1290. Its history, over seven centuries long, has been connected with the mine and production of salt. Now Wieliczka covers the area of 13.4 square kilometers. The Saline Castle was for centuries the seat of the salt minemanagement. It was visited by Polish kings and their guests and officials, who wanted to see the mine. The salt mine in Wieliczka is one of the most interesting and best known tourist venues in Poland.
