THE earliest memory of Gough Whitlam for Tim Freedman was images of the aspiring Prime Minister on the family’s black and white television. He remembered the history inextricably linked to one of the ALP’s most enduring figures when he formed his new band with Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis in 1992. “I was looking for a band name that was very Australian and very earthy and the idea came to me to name the band after Gough, who was very earthy and classy at the same time,” Freedman recalls. “When the Whitlams realised we had done so out of respect, they were always very supportive. I remember they came to see us play at the Factory, Gough was 91, and he said ‘That is the first rock concert I have ever been to.”
