THEME: FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD TEXT: “May they all be one as you, Father, are in Me and I am in You” (John 17:21). Friendship is a relationship between two or more people. God is expecting a close and lasting relationship from His people. Genesis Chapter 18 brings out the delight of true friendship with God. The friendship required from us must be so intimate that you never even need to ask Him to show you His will. Friendship with God is evidence of level of intimacy which confirms that you are nearing the final stage of your discipleship in the life of faith. When we are intimately acquainted with God as Jesus was, we will know God’s will for our life and get a perfect understanding of God Himself. In the Garden of Eden, we see God’s ideal relationship with man. Adam and Eve enjoyed an intimate friendship with God (Gen. 2: 8-9). Moses and Abraham were called “Friends of God”, (Num. 12:3, James 2:23). David was called “a man after my own heart” (Act 13:22). Job, Enoch and Noah had intimate friendship with God. (Job. 1: 1, 8, Gen. 5:24, Gen. 5: 28-29). In the New Testament, we can now approach God anytime. Unlike the Old Testament Priests who had to spend hours preparing to meet God in sacrifices and rituals. The Bible says “ Now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us making us friends of God” (Rom. 5:11). Friendship with God is possible only because of the grace of God and sacrifices of Jesus. (2 Cor. 5:18). God invites us to enjoy friendship and Fellowship with all three persons of the Trinity (I Jn. 1:3, I Cor. 1:19, 2 Cor. 13:14). God is expecting us to grow in intimacy with Him. There comes a time in the life of a child of God when God in His infinite wisdom decides not to do anything in that believers immediate environment or in his family or his generation without first and foremost discussing it with him. We are talking of a stage in your relationship with God when the Almighty begins to consider it not appropriate, not good to take any step in His dealing with Mankind without personally letting you know of it in advance, even sometimes seeking your opinion about it. (Exo. 32: 9 – 10, Psalm 25: 14). The purpose of God for us is that we be not in the dark as touching His programmes and activities. He wants to relate intimately with us. He wants to show us constantly what He is doing. He wants to show us things to come. What a privilege for the Almighty God to confide in a mortal man. How can you get to the level of intimate relationship with God? What does God look for in a man before He can confide in that man? What God look for include total commitment to the perfect will of God “Ye are my friends if ye do whatever I command you” (John 15:14), faithfulness (Number 12: 6-8), humility (Num. 12:3), Fear of God (Gen. 22:12, Dan. 6: 1-11, Prov. 3:7). Do all the above, and then God will make you His confidant. Almighty God is yearning to be your friend. “Come closer to God, and God will come closer to you” (James 4 : 8)
