THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... Aug. 1 1857-Through the end of the month, heavy rain fell in central Arkansas, causing significant agricultural damage. 1962-6.24 inches of rain fell at Siloam Springs. 1985-Highs of 100 to 105 were seen in central portions of the state, and in the Arkansas River Valley. 1986-Severe thunderstorms in north and central sections broke a heat wave. 2010-Through the 5th, A heat wave that began in mid-July peaked before waning by late August. Many stations recorded temperatures in excess of 105. Harrison reached 100 for the first time in three years. Leola reached 108, and Little Rock recorded its hottest day in ten years, with a high of 107 on the 3rd. During this time, low temperatures across central and southern Arkansas were in the upper 70s and lower 80s. 2011-Through the 8th, a summer-long heat wave peaked, with many locations recording their all-time record high temperatures, as well as over a week of consecutive 100-degree days. The hottest days were the 3rd and 4th, with 116 degrees at Silver Hill, 115 at Russellville and Fort Smith, 114 at Little Rock, 112 at Harrison, 111 at North Little Rock, and 110 at Pine Bluff. Lows on the morning of the 3rd were mostly in the mid 80s, with North Little Rock only bottoming out at an incredible 86 degrees. Aug. 2 1896-A high of 111 was recorded at Prescott. 1984-Severe thunderstorms and some flooding occurred in central sections. 2009-One to three inch rains fell in portions of central and southwest Arkansas, with 3.20 inches at Malvern, and 3.04 at Horatio. Aug. 3 1901-Several places saw highs of 105 or more in the northeast. Jonesboro and Newport reached 109. 1918-Bee Branch recorded a high temperature of 114. 1954-Through the 19th, a summer-long heat wave peaked, with widespread 100 degree temperatures each day. Little Rock reached 100 degrees on 10 straight days (10th-19th) and 16 out of 17. 1987-Most highs in the state were at or above 100, with Morrilton reaching 110. 2010-The Searcy airport reached 110. Leola reached 108, which tied the all-time record high originally set during the July 1980 heat wave. The record only stood for one year before being eclipsed on August 4th 2011. 2011-Highs at most locations were above 100, and in the central and West above 110. Silver Hill reached 116, Russellville and Fort Smith 115, Little Rock 114. Lows only fell to 86 at North Little Rock and 85 at Little Rock.
