THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... Aug. 8 1897-Mostly two to four inch rains fell in the Arkansas River Valley. 4.25 inches fell at Fort Smith. 1947-During a heat wave that began on July 31st and ended on August 11th, many stations had highs of 105 degrees or more. 1970-Fort Smith recorded a high of 108 degrees. Aug. 9 1918-Bee Branch reached 113 degrees. 1930-Newport and Conway recorded highs of 114. 1934-Most highs were at or above 110 in the northwest. Lead Hill reached 116, Calico Rock and Mountain Home 114, and Subiaco 113. 1936-Booneville and Ozark reached 115 degrees, and a few other places had highs of 112 to 114. 1940-A weakening hurricane moved across eastern Texas and western Arkansas, producing two to three inch rains across northern Arkansas.
