THIS DAY IN MISSOURI HISTORY - • April 4, 1883 – The infamous Marsden Gang of hog thieves was on the run in the Hillsboro area and one member squealed on the others to get leniency. A mob of 25-30 armed men were closing in on those still at large. • April 4, 1888 – The Annual Meeting of the Rock Township Anti-Horsethief Society was held at Zimpfers hall, in Antonia. • April 4, 1900 – Fire destroyed Kansas City’s Convention Hall and surrounding buildings. The Democrat’s National Convention was only three months away so they quickly built one of the world’s largest arenas on the site. Badges were being worn all around town saying, “Kansas City Spirit.” • April 4, 1904 – The Women’s Humane Society heard the results of an investigation which showed that the Igorote people who were eating dogs at the World’s Fair killed the dogs by beating them to death. The women suggested that the Igorates be supplied with canned dog meat which was readily available. • April 4, 1912 – According to the Mountain Grove Journal, “Sid Collins laid two eggs which weighed nine ounces on the table of the Lamar Republican-Sentinel last week.” That would really be news if . . . • April 4, 1928 – Marguerite Ann Johnson was born in St. Louis. The poet is better known as Maya Angelou. • April 4, 1940 – Captain Joseph Streckfuss announced that “The Mystery Ship” being built in St. Louis was going to be an excursion cruise boat. He said it would be named The Admiral. • April 4, 1968 – Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and mayors of St. Louis and Kansas City made many appeals for calm. There was rioting in the St. Louis jail and in much of Kansas City. The man convicted of the murder was James Earl Ray, an escapee from Missouri’s State Penitentiary. • April 4, 2012 – The city of Kennett was attempting an alligator roundup. Two years earlier a traveling salesman sold about fifty gators in the town and the “pets” were growing larger and more dangerous.
