THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY (August 23rd): 1947: Keith Moon was born 1949: Rick Springfield was born 1951: Mark Hudson (The Hudson Brothers) was born 1962: John Lennon and Cynthia Powell were married at the Mount Pleasant register office in Liverpool -- Lennon then played a Beatles gig at the Riverpark Ballroom that night in Liverpool 1963: The Rolling Stones appeared on UK TV show Ready, Steady, Go! for the first time, performing their debut single Come On. The group made a total of 20 appearances on the show between 1963 and 1966 1964: The Beatles play the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA, a concert which is recorded for a planned upcoming live album. However, the resultant sound quality is so poor due to screaming teenagers that it sits on the shelf until 1977, when the LP The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl is released, combining songs from this show and a similar Hollywood Bowl gig a year later. (Some applause from the tapes, however, was used on Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, at the start of With A Little Help From My Friends and also tacked on to the end of the title tracks reprise to suggest the end of the concert.) 1966: Yellow Submarine // Eleanor Rigby was at #1 on the UK singles charts for The Beatles -- Eleanor came from actress Eleanor Bron (she appeared in the Help! film) and Rigby came from Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers, in Bristol, England 1966: They didnt sell this one out (11,000 empty seats) as they did in 1965, but the Beatles played at Shea Stadium in New York City (but their fee of $189,000 was higher than the previous year) 1967: Enjoying a wild birthday party Keith Moon drummer with The Who drove his Lincoln car into a Holiday Inn swimming pool. As the party had become out of control, the police were called to put an end to the festivities. Moon, ever keen to avoid the boys in blue snuck outside and got into a Lincoln Continental Limousine and attempted to make a getaway. Unfortunately, in his inebriated state he released the handbrake, and began rolling towards the pool. Moon simply sat back and waited, as the car crashed through the fence around the pool and into the water 1969: Johnny Cash started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Johnny Cash At San Quentin. The album was a recording of a live concert given to the inmates of San Quentin State Prison and was the follow-up to Cashs previous live album, the critically acclaimed and commercially successful At Folsom Prison 1969: The Rolling Stones started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Honky Tonk Women the groups fifth US No.1. The song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards was inspired by Brazilian gauchos at the ranch where Jagger and Richards were staying in Matao, Sao Paulo 1969: Ibex, featuring vocalist Freddie Bulsara (later Freddie Mercury), played a gig at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, Lancashire, UK 1970: Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground performed together for the last time at the New York Club Maxs Kansas City. Reed worked as a typist for his father for the next two years, at $40 per week 1975: Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds Fallin In Love hits #1 1978: Steve Martins King Tut is certified gold 1980: David Bowie was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with Ashes To Ashes his second UK No.1. Taken from the Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, the song continued the story of Major Tom from Bowies Space Oddity. The video for Ashes to Ashes was one of the most iconic of the 1980s and costing £250,000, it was at the time the most expensive music video ever made 2004: Queen becomes the first band officially sanctioned by the Iranian government since the 1979 cultural revolution that outlawed rock groups. Lead singer Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar of Indian parents, had remained quite popular in the country 2007: Queen guitarist Brian May is finally awarded his doctorate in astrophysics by Londons Imperial College -- the very Ph.
