THIS IS ACTUALLY NOT SPAM...that is, in the traditional sense. If you dont love books as I do, I suppose you will consider it such. Of course, that is your right, but in this instance, I believe it would also be your loss. From time to time, I resolve to boldly fly my geek flag and share (with you who choose to read my posts) the best of what Ive read. (I promise to also caution you about the worst, if you promise to keep in mind that books, as literary art, are only good or bad (and degrees between) as seen through the critics personal aesthetics. My most loved book of all time may be, in your opinion, good only to shred and used for the cats litter box.(I feel confident that you get my point.) MR. PENUMBRAS 24-HOUR BOOKSTORE by Robin Sloan is a book I read recently which stood out from many others because of its peculiar plot (read synopsis on any library or bookseller website) I admit that I was led to it myself by picking up a list of book finalists for an independent bookstores Book of the Year. It seemed from the cover copy to be a very different type of mystery, with quirky characters and odd settings; just the thing to get me off my diet of what Ill refer to as literary fast food - ittastes okay when youre eating it, especially if youre hungry (looking for a light read), but after youre done, you know you probably should have eaten something with some redeeming nutritional value. (I write this with no offense to that category of books; theres a time and a place for just about everything. The work of an author, in my opinion, is vastly underrated and underappreciated, so Im hesitant to criticize books others enjoy...but I digress. Get used to it.) The book delivered as I suspected it would, with (no spoilers) elements of conspiracy, mystery within mystery, mysterious characters who keep you wondering what drives their odd behavior...the more you read, the more your curiosity forces you to delve deeper into the book until all your questions are answered. NOT a cookie-cutter mystery, but not a laborious read, either, and a book Im better off for having read. Like a nutritionally-balanced, yet surprisingly refreshing and delicious mea, reminding me to be more judicious in what I consume (in both areas).l There are so many sources of book reviews out there, but lately, I wonder if theyve been written more to sell more books and promote the author, or to provide an unbiased criticism/opinion of the book. I wish only to share with you books which have positively impacted my life in some way, and others I wish I hadnt wasted my valuable time and money on. I encourage everyone else out there to do the same if you feel inspired to...with books, movies, whatever youre into. MAYBE Ill even start an NA Facebook group. Wow...all that lead-in, and I never even got to the fact: OLD AGE IS NOT A DISEASE. Well, clearly I have another problem, then! ADD? Trying to write an essay of sorts in a small space on my Kindle meant for a very short comment? Lack of practice at the art of brevity in modern electronic communication? Complete disregard/lack of being merciful to my audience (you who are reading this, if youve managed to stay with me this far)? ANSWER: A, B, AND C, but NOT D. In all honesty, I would love to hear your opinions on whatever youre into. I trust my friends infinitely more than Amazon reader and reviewer statistics! I hope this finds you well, wherever you are and whatever youre doing.
