Apology received for disgraceful attack on Muslims in Scottish schools. A letter of apology from Scottish Education Dept re Your ref: Our ref:2013/0024703 31 October 2013 Dear Mr Bhatti Many thanks for your email to Mr Michael Russell MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning about some resources used in a modern studies class. I have been asked to reply as I am the official responsible for curriculum policy development matters. Firstly I would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. I would like to assure you that Scottish Government, the Local Authority and the school involved took this matter very seriously. The Head Teacher conducted an assessment of the use of this material and concluded that the delivery of the curriculum in the school was balanced, however the use of the resource for homework was deemed inappropriate. A letter of apology about the homework has been sent to the parents concerned by the Head Teacher. Only one school was involved. I should let you know that the Scottish Government does not determine the detail of what is taught in Modern Studies. However, through Curriculum for Excellence we want to ensure that young people develop the values of compassion, integrity, justice, balance and impartiality, and that global citizenship is a key context for learning across the Curriculum in Scotland.
