THIS IS TODAY’S ‘80s SONG OF THE DAY, 3/5/2014: SONG TITLE: “Never Gonna Give You Up” ARTIST: Rick Astley ALBUM: Whenever You Need Somebody RELEASE DATE: August 3, 1987 GENRE: Dance-pop FAST FACT: Reached #1 for five weeks in the singer’s native U.K., the song later became the subject of a popular Internet prank known as “rickrolling” involving misleading links redirecting to the song’s music video. HOW ERICSSON COMMENTS IT: “According to the ‘Family Guy’ character Brian Griffin ‘this is a song by a gay guy’ [not really, as he is straight, married to a woman and has a daughter]. I first caught notice to the ‘rickrolling’ phenomenon when I was looking for an SNL video and instead got into this Rick Astley song. Despite this I don’t find his singing annoying, not do I have anything against him because of the hit track. It’s a really fun dance song that really gets into dreaming that you wished you lived in the ‘80s in your life. Furthermore, whats interesting about the songs release date is that I was only eight months old during that time. Maybe the first time I heard that song was when I made those cute dance moves that todays generation would consider the dancing baby thing they saw on the Internet? I wish I had a time machine so I could see all of that. https://youtube/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
