THOUGHT THIS WAS FANTASTIC! Adopt a Rescue, Have a Good Night By Steve Hofstetter When my show debuted this past weekend, there was a lot of feedback. Some people told me how I could have been a better host. My mother told me how I couldnt have been a better host. But the most common question was, why did you end your show like that? Carol Burnett tugged on her left ear. Jimmy Kimmel apologizes to Matt Damon. And ended my first TV show by saying Adopt a rescue, have a good night. The answer, to me, is simple. I said it because its the right thing to do. My wife Sara and I have discussed that, if we were ever in the position to do so, we would help a rescue organization, or maybe even start our own animal sanctuary. But 13-episode-network-test-money isnt nearly enough to do either of those things, unless a rescue organization needs one new dog bed. Fox is totally paying me enough to buy one new dog bed, if Sara were to pay for half of it. Adopting a rescue is important because almost 3 million healthy cats and dogs are put down every year. We could cut that in half instantly if everyone simply adopted instead of bought. But people buy dogs because theyre told its fashionable. People buy dogs because of the misinformation that shelter dogs are somehow less of a dog. People buy dogs because after World War II, the United States government marketed puppy mills as a cash crop. People buy dogs because they are uneducated and uninformed. Will I change anyones mind immediately by telling them to adopt a rescue? Thats no more likely than my saying have a good night will ensure that they have a good night. But perhaps my saying adopt a rescue will get other people to join me. And if we all say it enough, it will seep into the consciousness. Puppy mills happened because of marketing. So I used marketing to help make them unhappen. I hope that one day, Sara and I are in a position to fund our own sanctuary. I hope that one day, Sara and I are in a position to fund many sanctuaries. And I hope that one day, Sara and I are in a position to have the ear of the legislators who can pass stricter laws banning the wretched institution that their government started in the first place. Maybe when I re-negotiate for season two. But until then, adopt a rescue. And have a good night. ---------- Steve Hofstetter is the host and executive producer of Laughs, which airs on Fox stations every weekend. To see airtimes in your area, visit LaughsTVShow
