THREE GOOD THINGS ON SEPTEMBER 1. As I just posted, for many years, I thought the only world of event of note that happened on my birthday was the beginning of World War II. Then I discovered that, September 1 is the start of the Orthodox church year and the first day of the Time of Creation, a period of prayer, fasting, and activism for the environment. This year the focus is on climate change. This year September 1 is Labor Day. And also, here in Columbia, were putting on Artists for Justice: Columbia Artists for Justice, in response to the tragedy and unrest in Ferguson, MO, will be holding an event on Monday, September 1, 2014, in beautiful Peace Park in downtown Columbia with the following precepts in mind: peace, justice, and civil rights. We believe that creativity has been and continues to be an impetus for change. We believe that art is healing. We believe that an artists instrument can impact their community and the world. We also acknowledge that there is a keen frustration in our community and others regarding the events in Ferguson. We believe our voices, hands, feet, instruments, words, and fellowship can serve as an expression of these feelings. As a result, Artists for Justice, supported by Columbia Artists and the English Graduate Student Association will bring a day of art, music, and poetry in support of the people in Ferguson and the Civil Rights of all with performances by local artists, activities for children, and voter registration.
