TIPICA 73 La Candela Inca Records (ISLP-1043) Tipica 73 at their early best - filled with life, fire, and imagination - a mighty approach that tries to grab up many different Latin styles at once, and which makes most of them come out pretty darn great. Adalberto Santiago sings lead vocals on this lively set of modern tipica tracks, by one of the best traditional groups to come out of the New York scene of the 70s. Theres a nice return to tradition on most tunes here, but the approach differs slightly from track to track, sometimes very back to basics, sometimes filled with the looser, more expressive modes of the times. The opener Canuto a tasty guaracha co-written by B.J. Gutierrez and Adalberto Santiago kicks off in style and with a tasty arrangement. El Jamaiquino written by Francisco Fallove, is a sensuous yet mellow cha cha which features the wah wah guitar of Nelson Gonzalez. Los Santeros, written by percussionist Orestes Vilato is a tasty guaguanco that features trombone work of Leopoldo Pineda. Te Llevo Comigo , penned by Cuban great Juan Cadavieco, which features a nice trumpet solo by Joe Mannozzi and a very tipico Cuban tres solo by Nelson Gonzalez. Other tracks on this classic gem include La Escoba Barrendera, No Me Critiques, No Somos Nada a sweet bolero with Adalberto leading the way, but the icing on the cake is the closer & title track La Candela written by Los Van Van founder Juan Formell is given a special treatment that features again the wah wah guitar of Nelson Gonzalez and a soaring massive timbales solo by Orestes Vilato, check out the bata drumming by Angel Cachete Maldonado, it tipical Tipica 73. This classic LP is a must for all serious Tipica 73 aficionados and they come in strong with Afro-Caribbean Candela. Enjoy! Side A 1. Canuto 2. El Jamaiquino 3. Los Santeros 4.
