TIPS ON MOULD. DO YOU HAVE MOULD? FOLLOW THIS ADVICE... I let properties of a high standard. But when a tenant refuses to accept the need to open windows to let mousture out then within 6 months a place can look like a slum & need redecorating. Mould is caused by condensation due to lack of ventilation. I recently spoke to a chartered surveyor who had just been on a course about damp problems. He said mould is actually a fairly delicate organism & only lives on pure water such as condensation. Penetrating damp due a building fault contains salts from the brickwork & cement that kills the mould bacteria & leaves a yellow halo, not mould. He said hes seen water literally running down walls due to moisture in the air condensing on cold walls. If the tenant doesnt want to open windows as it lets in cold air then the alternative is to buy an electric dehumidifier. They cost about £140. Its not very helpful to depict properties like this then blame the landlord for mouldy walls.
