TJC are dismayed to hear that US-based Tibet scholar Elliot Sperling was denied access to China this week, particularly as the grounds for his denial appear to be his vocal support of detained Uyghur scholar, Ilham Tohti. We applaud his commitment to speaking up in the face of China’s punitive tactics - “I have done nothing wrong except to dissent — vociferously, I admit, but still I use only words — and have no intention of conforming to authoritarian norms for the sake of a visa.” Scholarship from experts such as Elliot provide a crucial insight into the lived realities of Tibet’s past and present. In a transparent manner befitting a world power, the Chinese government should release Ilham Tohti and should allow Elliot Sperling to return and continue his scholarly engagements in China. nytimes/2014/07/08/world/asia/us-scholar-who-supported-uighur-colleague-is-denied-entry-to-china.html?_r=0
