(TL;DR: Nature is awesome. Also, Mike contemplates the human condition, and urges you to do the same.) Earlier this evening, on my way back from teaching, I came upon a group of humans near the riverfront, who were pointing their cellular devices in the direction of a large red-tailed hawk, which was on the ground, eating a squirrel. There were several faces of disgust, which I noticed were in contrast to the grin which had crept its way onto my face. This expression came from the realization that I was witnessing not one, but two, wonders of nature: the first, a beautiful bird gorging itself on a recently-living rodent (which I can only assume was preceded by an even more wondrous scene involving the demise of said rodent); and the other, a group of nearly-hairless apes who couldnt resist the urge to document it in electronic format. I also couldnt ignore the point that these humans were judging the predator for doing what it must to survive, all while looking on in awe as if unable to believe that nature actually happened anymore (ignoring the irony of how easy it would be for an outsider to judge these humans as being copies of each other, with their look-alike cell-phones, repulsed by gore, yet still compelled to stand around and gawk at the scene). The hawk even appeared to be judging us for watching it, as it looked up and glared at us periodically while chewing, before finishing its bite and turning its attention back to the meal. Of course, it was probably just making sure we werent going to close in and steal any of that delicious rodent meat ... I know I sure was tempted.
