TO OUR VETERANS, WHITTEMORE SPEEDWAY SALUTES YOU! Posted on May 23, 2013 by Mr. Bishop By LJ Trinklein 5/28/13 With a chill in the air, Whittemore Speedway opened for it’s 65th consecutive season, remembering those who serve. After all of the preliminary events were finished we kicked off the feature races with the modified class for a manufacturer’s sponsored, 50 lap main event. Before the drop of the green, during hot laps, an incident on the back stretch sent Laci Donnert #1 and Greg Fullerton #05 to the pits unable to continue. When the green flew James Brown #36 and Mike Luberda #30 ran side by side as the rest of the field doing the same. Heat winner Buck Harsen #40 and CJ Harsen #41 made contact and spun bringing out a yellow. CJ went to the pits and had to go to the rear of the field for the restart. Luberda Sr. found the lead as Dave Christenson #39 passed Brown on the outside for second. Christianson worked Luberda Sr. for the lead as B. Harsen worked Brown for third. Top Qualifier Bob Farley #2 made his way forward from his starting position in the rear, and put pressure on B. Harsen and Brown, sometimes running three wide. Brown spun, bringing out the next caution. The restart had Luberda Sr and Christenson the front row. Christenson grabbed the lead as Luberda got loose. At half-way it was Christenson, Luberda, Harsen, Farley, and Chris Trinklein #25 nose to tail for the top 5. Another spin by Brown would group the field again with the running order Christenson, Luberda, Farley and Harson in the front two rows. Farley and Harsen moved by Luberda, and tried to chase down the leader. Christenson felt the pressure from Farley, but held on to win, with Farley second, B. Harsen third. Rick Wiecorik picked up a heat win. Bishop Legends rolled out next the green came out Kyle Maki #18 took the lead with Mitchell Huber #23 close behind. It didn’t take long and there was a new leader. Huber held on to the lead as heat winner Loren Short #3 brought the pressure. Short passed Huber on the inside for the lead as Bobby Murany #10 tried to pass Huber as well. Short lead at half way, and started to drive away. Murany tried to stay close to short as they worked lapped traffic. The laps wound down and Short took the win, Murany second and Huber third in a caution free feature. The Mini Stock class was out next. It was a small field this evening, so bring out your four cylinder racecars as all are welcome including front wheel drives and pick-ups. Last years champion Taylor Babcock #56, who also started her first modified race this evening, and Eric Valent got out front and rand side by side for most of this event. Valent just edged out Babcock at the stripe, Cody LaFluer #47 was third under the nearly full moon. Lead sleds took the green and the #70 of Brian Bearro took the early lead with the field racing two and three wide behind. The three wide racing resulted in Derek Moe loosing ground and Bobby Pauley #88 moving up to make the pass for the lead. Hard charging Moe worked back to second at half way. Moe closed in on Pauley and the race was on for the lead. At the stripe it was Pauley with Moe all over his back bumper and Steven Ulman #32 in third. All the results are unofficial, and how they finished on the track. For official results visit thewhittemorespeedway/.
