TODAY: CSI Ice Age! There’s been an extinction and we need your help to get to the bottom of it. Put on your sleuthing hat and delve into the mystery. Follow the clues and explore what may have caused some of Indiana’s largest mammals to go extinct. Was it predators with their sharp teeth in the prairie, humans with their pointed spears in the wetlands or climate change with increased temperatures in the forest? Activities include - Ice Age Crime Scene - Mystery of the Bones: The Alton paleo-dig site is a mysterious case. Here visitors are introduced to the Alton Site as dicovered and excavated by ISM in 1990. Guests will examine the layout for the bones (the crime scene) and receive some important clues to get them on their way to solving this mystery. What is a Fossil Mystery Box: Guests will discover what makes a fossil a fossil. This activity will prepare guests to identify fossils and to tell the difference between a fossil and non fossil. Excavation Skills: Guests will dig into the dig Pit located in the Ice Age Giants exhibit and practice their excavation skills. They will learn the tools used by paleontologists and how to begin looking at bones to determine what story they tell. Bone and Tooth ID: Guests will learn to distinguish the differences between Mammoths and Mastodons, Peccary and Dire Wolves by examining their skeleton and teeth and by using the scientific method. How Old is It?: Guests will learn different techniques for aging a mammoth and a mastodon. They will be given a replica of a tusk and will have to count the rings to determine our animal’s age. Included with museum admission.
